I’d just finished my classes for the day, when my best friend, Amanda came running up to me. “ALEX OMG THERE’S A CONCERT AT SCHOOL TONIGHT, YOU HAVE TO COME!!!!!”
“Oh, urm... ok sure, why not?” I agreed smiling. I didn’t often go out after school, especially to come back to school. But the concerts were such a rare thing now that I just had to go when they came up.
“I knew you’d agree! Thanks so much, its gunna be so much fun.” Amanda said smiling at me.
“Oh and urrr... I also volunteered you to do part of a duet with someone.” She said adding it quickly hoping I wouldn’t go mad.
“YOU DID WHAT!?” I shouted.
“Well I know you love to sing, and the song you’re gunna do is one of your favourites, so...”
“Wait, who said I was gunna do it?” I asked getting a little madder. I couldn’t believe this. I never sang in front of anyone. In fact only a few people even knew about my musical side, no one else had any idea about my acoustic guitar or my singing, and certainly not that I was any good.
“Oh Alex, you have to. They’ve already put you down for it and you have to, please!!... I hear there’s gunna be a new guy performing tonight, and he’s meant to be quite hot.” She said trying with all her might to get me to do it.
“You know those are only rumours right. And anyway, if I’m performing, I’ll be spending most of my time backstage. I’ll probably only see whoever it is that I’m performing with” I said. I was determined to try and win this fight, even though I knew I’d already lost. Amanda had a determined look on her face, and the puppy dog eyes that always got me. I sighed, “Ok, I’ll do it. Who is the other half of this duet anyway, and what song is it?”
“Well the song’s ‘Always Attract’, You Me at Six, and whoever your partner is picked it, but I have no idea who they are.”
I sighed again and carried on walking. Great, I thought. Then when I started to think, I realised I didn’t actually know anyone who would pick that song. I remembered back to the first day I started at this school. I’d been a complete outcast, and even now, I only had a few friends. I’d been lucky enough to find Amanda to stick around with me, but otherwise there were only a few people in my little group of friends. To me, it seemed that everyone outside the group hadn’t even heard of YM@6, let alone would actually listen to them... just a bunch of chavs and jocks.
“Fine, look, I’ll meet ya later. See ya.” And with that I went home to get ready for my big performance tonight. I had no idea what to wear. So in the end, I went with my black skinnies, a nice top and my converse. I was worried about the performance, but spent my free time that night singing over my part of the duet, until I finally got it perfect. And then, finally, it was time to leave.
