Look Wider

'Look Wide, and when you are Looking Wider, Look Wider still.' Lord Baden-Powell
Look Wider is a scheme for members of the Senior Section, it's a framework that gives you ideas of what you can do, but you do not have to stick to what it says in the book. You decided as an individual what you want to do. Its a challenge and realising what your goals are.
Look Wider is split into 8 different octants.

But what is an Octant?
An octant is divided into three stages:
- Phase 1 (this has three parts to it)
- Phase 2
- Phase 3

Phase 1 gives you an opportunity to start something new. Phase 1 is split into three activities. This could be three new things or trying new elements of an existing skill or hobby.

Phase 2 allows you to either build on an activity from Phase 1 or take an existing skill or hobby to a new level. Generally, these activities take a bit longer than those in Phase 1. You only need to complete one activity for Phase 2.

Phase 3 is taking things even further. You could gain a qualification, try teaching someone else an activity you have tried for Phase 1 or 2 or participate in something that will challenge your own expectations of yourself.
The 8 octants are:
International
Creativity
Fit for Life
Independent Living
Leadership
Out of Doors
Personal Values
Communtiy Action
Do all three Phases in one Octant and you can achieve an Octant Certificate. Do phases one and two of all eight Octants and you can receive your Chief Guide’s Challenge Certificate and Badge.

Young Leader Qualification
Its for any member of the Senior Section but is mainly aimed at 14- to 16-year-olds.

Being a Young Leader in guiding is a rewarding and fun experience. The Young Leader Qualification has been designed to help you take an active part in the effective running of a unit.   Read this information carefully so that you can understand what you have to do. If there is anything you do not understand, ask your unit Leader, supporter, or other helpful person to help you.

Throughout your time as a Young Leader there will be lots of people who can help you, so just ask!

Most qualifications in guiding are 'competency-based'; this means that you have to show or prove what you can do rather than sitting exams or writing lots of essays.   To gain the qualification you will either provide hard copy evidence (eg a copy of the programme you have organised or a letter you have written or a certificate to say that you have gained another qualification), or people-based evidence (ie when someone sees you do something, like organise a game).

The Young Leader Qualification consists of two modules.   Anything that you do towards your Young Leader Qualification will count towards the full Leadership Qualification if you decide to go on and do this.

The two modules that make up the Young Leader Qualification are:

Your role in the programme - Module 1
This allows you to demonstrate that you know and understand the programme for the section you are working with.   So, if you are a Young Leader with a Brownie pack, you need to know about what Brownies do and show that you can sometimes lead different activities, like a game or a Pow-wow.
Note that you will need to repeat this module if you start working with a new section (eg moving from Brownies to Rainbows).
Your role in Girlguiding UK - Module 2
You need to demonstrate that you can work with girls and young women and understand something about them.

Queens Guide Award
The Queen’s Guide Award is the highest award for members of Girlguiding UK. The Award is open to any members aged 16 to 25 and must be completed within three years or before your 26th birthday, whichever is sooner.

The Award is based on the concepts of personal challenge and participation and is split into five sections: service in guiding, outdoor challenge, personal skill development, community action and residential.

These clauses give you the chance to develop through activities that you enjoy.

To start the award you will need to get in touch with your County Queens Guide Adviser, for Bedfordshire this is Sue Hunt. You will find her details in the directory.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award
As a member of the Senior Section you can work towards your Duke of Edinburgh's (D of E) Award. There are three levels of the Award – Bronze, Silver and Gold – and at each level you have to reach the requirements of four sections: Service, Physical Recreation, Skill and Expedition. In addition the Gold level requires you to take part in a Residential Project.

To learn more about this award and for advise you may have to contact Paul Hunt whos details are in the directory.

In4mers - 4ward 4self 4others - a peer education initiative
Peer education is about learning from each other – similar people sharing knowledge and information with one another. In the Girlguiding UK context, a peer is a person who is the same age, or belongs to or works with the same section, or who has a similar guiding role to you.

There are many different ways that you can get involved with 4 – it depends on what you already know about peer education or how much time that you’ve got to give.   The different levels of 4 are:
- Tasters
- Basics
- Refresher
- Topic
- Advanced

Bedfordshire has 4 In4mers, an In4mer is a member of the senior section who is trained to go out to any unit and talk about an issue in the world today. For example, Bullying, Drugs, Alcohol, Eating Disorders and many more. If you would like an In4mer to come to your unit to talk about something else they are able to research this topic and do a session relating to the topic you asked for.

For more information on In4mers and how to become involved or for someone to visit your unit please contact Paul Hunt or Sarah Hunt ( the site owner )
